*The Kind Kids Field Trip was a success! Have your children talked to you about what they saw, what they heard, and how they want to help animals?

*On Monday, the Second Grade Classes had a visitor from the San Jose Museum of Art. We learned about line, shape, and color; we looked at diverse art works and shared our insights, and asked Big Questions about “Art” and what it means. Please use the SJ Museum of Art Family Pass that the museum provides to spend quality time enjoying art with your family!

The San Jose Museum of Art’s website is located at http://www.sjmusart.org. To check on the exhibitions before attending with your family, click here. For more information on the “Let’s Look at Art Program”, click here.

  • Keeping Kids Busy Over the Long Weekend

    November 30, 2013

We always say, “Go outside, spend time with family, and read!” when asked what children can do over vacations to keep learning and growing. Doing those three things every day is the best prescription for a healthy, happy student! That said, there are lots of ways to augment that basic recipe…

Have your children run out of novel activities to keep them amused this weekend? Never fear, the class blog is coming to the rescue with links to ideas, games, online books, and more. Enjoy!

    1. Online Thanksgiving Games on the Primary Games site provide cute graphics and immersion in symbols and themes associated with this holiday.

    2. Get out your library card! If you don’t have access to children’s books or a library where you are this weekend, try surfing over to the San Jose Public Library Kids’ page and logging on to Tumblebooks. (Click on the “Read Online” link, then click on the first entry, “Tumblebooks”. If you don’t go through this route, you will be out of the library system and may have to pay for the service.) With your library card number and PIN (usually the last four digits of your home phone number) your child can have access to hundreds of fully animated online books! Ms. Seyan is a big fan of this site: Grade ranges and AR levels are listed with each title, you can search for your books by level, and there is often a game to go with the books! Highly recommended.

    3. If your child misses the Computer Lab, have them check out the Carson Adaptive Learning Links page and log on to Dreambox, Lexia, or Imagine Learning.

54.Remember that your child may practice Math Facts in a Flash anywhere there is online access. Simply log on to the Renaissance Place site and choose “Math facts in a Flash” and “Work at Your Current Level”.

    5. If you really want to learn about Thanksgiving, here are some more scholarly sources that you and your child may explore together: Learn NC’s “Teaching About Thanksgiving” and PBS Learning Media’s “Thanksgiving”.

…and here’s a local news story that reflects the spirit of the season: “$20,000 Donation Helps Youth Football Team.”

We hope this helps. Please visit again later for updates to our Recommended Links, including Ms. Won’s picks for phones and tablets!

Students will be reviewing to greater then >, less than <, and equal to = and have ample experiences communicating their comparisons in words before symbols are started.

Second graders will rely on first grade knowledge of hundreds, tens, and ones, modeling numbers, and comparing them.

    Common Core Standard:

2.NBT.3 & 4: Read and write numbers to 1,00 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form; and: Compare two three-digit numbers based on the meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, <, and= symbols to record the results of comparisons.
